Spend an evening socializing with friends while learning something new

Istock/oleksagrzegorz

Cooking class

I love cooking and part of the reason why I love it so much is that it brings family and friends together around a table. Whether it’s a fun evening with the girls or precious time spent with my own family, there is nothing better than sitting down at a table and sharing supper with those you love.

With that thought in mind, I started talking to some of my friends and all agreed that they wished they were able to create more meals at home. However, the idea of cooking after a long day at work or with the kids was daunting to them. Many agreed that if they could spend a night with friends, teaching each other some easy dishes that could either be made in advance or made quickly, they would be more inspired to cook (and more confident in the kitchen). My solution? Start a cooking class at home.

You don't need to hire a private chef or culinary instructor if you're looking to learn some new dishes — all you need are a couple of friends who know their way around the kitchen and are eager to share some new ideas and recipes. Once you determine the date and who is coming, plan on what theme you'll focus on — say pastas or no-cook dinners, even Mexican or French. The chefs in charge (not necessarily the host) will then determine the menu.

So that each guest can take home any leftovers, make sure guests bring their own storage containers. These glass ones don't retain smells or get stained. Then, to make re-creating the recipes at home once the class is over easy, be prepared to hand out copies of the recipes being prepared so that "students" can make notes along the way.

Here's what I'd make for a summer-themed cooking class:

40 Healthy Summer Recipes You’ll Want to Make All Season Long

Summer is great for many reasons, but one of my favorite parts of the season is the food. Hands down. Tomatoes, watermelon, berries, peaches, and corn are abundant and ripe, making it so easy and satisfying to throw together healthy summer recipes. The weather is finally nice enough to stand outside and grill everything instead of cooking inside in a cramped kitchen. Everyone’s making side dishes like dips and pasta salads—two wonderful things that I always wish were common year round (seriously, who says we have to save them for BBQs?)

Most healthy summer recipes are also relatively quick and easy to make, which is ideal when you’re too busy enjoying the long, sunny days outside. No one wants to be hunched over the stove for hours on any day, but especially when all that cooking is wasting precious daylight.

To help make your summer easier, healthier, and more delicious, we rounded up some of the best healthy summer recipes on the internet. From refreshing salads to juicy grilled chicken and all the hearty side dishes in between, these healthy summer recipes are about to make food your favorite part of summer too.

A note about the word healthy here: We know that healthy is a complicated concept. Not only can it mean different things to different people, it’s a word that’s pretty loaded (and sometimes fraught), thanks to the diet industry’s influence on the way we think about food. At SELF, when we talk about food being healthy, we’re primarily talking about foods that are nutritious, filling, and satisfying. But it also depends on your preferences, your culture, what’s accessible to you, and so much more. We selected these recipes with those basic criteria in mind while also trying to appeal to a wide variety of nutritional needs and taste buds.
