Trader Joe’s Smashing S’mores are chocolate-covered layers of marshmallow and graham cracker that taste just as delicious as the ones you’d find by the campfire.

We’re pretty much always down for a s’more, but our affinity for them grows even deeper during the summer months. Whether you grew up going to summer camp, enjoyed cookouts with the neighborhood, or took camping trips with your family, there’s probably a special place in your heart for a warm, gooey s’more on a summer night. But luckily, you don’t have to build a fire or fight off mosquitos to enjoy them anymore, thanks to Trader Joe’s!

We stumbled upon Trader Joe’s Smashing S’mores on a grocery run and just had to try them ASAP. And like most of the other Trader Joe’s treats out there, we were hooked immediately!

These Smashing S’mores are basically a marshmallow-and-graham-cracker square covered in chocolate, so what’s not to love? Our staff agreed there was a serious Three Musketeers vibe going on, but these babies were even more delicious when heated up! Just a quick 5-10 seconds in the microwave transformed these already-tasty treats into ooey-gooey bites of heaven.

Though the serving size is only two pieces, we all could agree that two squares were pretty rich and satiating. Each serving has 150 calories, 7g fat, 2g sat fat, 21g carbs, 3g fiber, 18g sugars, and 2g protein.

This is much better than that of a traditional s’more, which packs 268 calories, 9g fat, 4g sat fat, 46g carbs, 1g fiber, and 24g sugar. We’ll be content with the Trader Joe’s version, saving us both time and calories!


Candy Blog

Trader Joe’s has some great summertime themed candies in their tubbed goodies. The Trader Joe’s Milk Chocolate Smashing S’Mores with graham cracker and marshmallow have been around for at least a year. I looked for them a few times and couldn’t find them and assumed that they were another one of those transient Trader Joe’s products. On my visit over Independence Day weekend though, there were stacks so I grabbed one immediately.

My tub held 12 Smashing S’mores and the label said that it was 7 ounces. (The nutrition panel said that a serving was 2 pieces and there were 8 servings in the package - I can understand there being one or so plus or minus in the average package, but I can’t understand how they could even cram 16 of these little S’mores into the tub at all.)

The ingredients are interesting. It’s real milk chocolate for the coating, the marshmallow uses Kosher gelatin (basically non-pork derived) and the graham cracker part is almost all organic (except for the vanilla and arrow root flour).

The little squares are about an inch to an inch and a half cubed.

The base is a rustic and thick graham cracker coated with a little milk chocolate then a square of marshmallow on top of that. The whole thing is then enrobed in milk chocolate with a decorative drizzle of dark chocolate.

The bite is soft, the marshmallow, which occupies most of the volume is soft, spongy and moist. It’s not that flavorful and not that sweet, so it offsets the other levels of sweetness well. The milk chocolate coating is creamy and better than average though very sweet on its own. The graham cracker was thick and more rough, like a digestive than the sort of grocery store graham cracker I’m accustomed to. The flavor was wheaty with a little touch of honey. The effect of all of it together is great, the pieces are not too big that an adventurous person couldn’t pop it all in their mouth at once, and the marshmallow grabs the chocolate well enough that it doesn’t all crumble apart when bitten in half.

The tub advises popping it into the microwave for 4 to 6 seconds for the traditional S’more treat. The effect of this is to create a completely gooey and soupy interior though the chocolate amazingly doesn’t melt completely. The thing I like best about toasted marshmallows is the toasted part. I could probably just eat the toasted outsides and leave the gooey stuff for someone else, so the microwave option doesn’t really do much for me, but I certainly can see others really digging it.

The big bonus here is that these are Kosher. It’s pretty rare to find Kosher marshmallows, and even harder to find Kosher marshmallow candy products.


What air fryer brand and model do you have?

About one year ago on Amazon Prime Day, we purchased our very first air fryer. We went with the Philips 2.75 qt Viva Air Fryer (affiliate link!) , which has served us well. To be fair, I’ve never personally tried any other air fryer, but I still think I can offer some insight if you’re trying to pick one out for yourself.

Things to consider when you buy an air fryer:

  • Size: I have a basic 2.75 quart air fryer which can comfortably cook meals for two. We’re very happy with it. However, there’s no way mine could fit a whole chicken or enough food at a time to feed four people. Consider getting the XL size if you want to cook more food at once (but remember, it’s going to take up more room in your kitchen and possibly cost more!).
  • Analog vs Digital: Again, my air fryer is super basic and does not have any kind of digital display. I simply set the dial to the (approximate) temperature I want, turn on the timer, and it goes. No presets or different modes. Just one mode: Air fry! Keep in mind digital is probably going to be *slightly* more accurate temperature wise, but it will also probably be more expensive. I’ve never really felt like I could get more out my air fryer if it had a digital display.
  • Wire Basket vs. Non-Stick Coating Basket: The Philips air fryer I own has a wire basket (you can see it pictured below). Other air fryers may have a non-stick coated basket with holes. I can’t directly compare, but I would *guess* the non-stick coating basket is better at not letting liquid and grease drop through to the bottom of the air fryer. One (pretty popular) recipe I tried began smoking in a dangerous manner because a lot of grease dripped down, but it was A LOT of grease. Most things I cook in the air fryer are not super greasy, so the wire basket works for me.

This air fryer is larger than mine and has a non-stick coated basket instead of a wire basket. Not all air fryers are the same, so be sure to do your research before buying one randomly off the internet!


Green Kombucha

No one talks about Trader Joe’s kombucha, and I really think it deserves the spotlight! The green kombucha is my favorite, mostly because it makes me feel healthy. However, the thing I love most about TJ’s kombucha is the sugar content—there are only 9g in the whole bottle, while many other brands contain double that amount. Plus, it’s only $2.69, which is a steal.

Salsa is something many of us love to purchase at farmers’ markets or make ourselves in the summer time with the season’s best bounty. But we also add Trader Joe’s new Bloody Mary Salsa to our carts every trip for an easy and delicious ready-made option. We all loved how this salsa was tangy, spicy and refreshing all at the same time. 

Man, oh man, were these little lattes good. And at just $1.99, they were a much less expensive way to enjoy our iced coffee habit without having to make it ourselves.  Trader Joe’s has really been stepping up their vegan product game in 2019!


Fancy S’mores

I ate a lot of s’mores as a kid. It all started at our family’s annual summer vacations to Kentucky Lake. Later, at home, my sister and I would make them regularly in the microwave. Authentic “camp” flavor doesn’t happen in the microwave, but it was fun to watch them rise and (nearly!) explode.

It probably comes as no surprise that hershey bars and jet puffed marshmallows aren’t quite my thing anymore. So, last weekend, Jack and I headed to Whole Foods where we gathered ideas and ingredients to make these fancy pants gourmet s’mores.

Most of our inspiration came from the fancy chocolate aisle. I could lose myself in that section all day… So. many. pretty. packages. Jack waited impatiently while I decided which bars looked prettiest together which flavors would go best together.

Truth be told, we tried to make our own homemade vegan marshmallows. It was a big fail, but these vegan homemade-like ones by Sweet and Sara are awesome. (Find them in the refrigerated section).

To keep things somewhat classic, we used regular (365 brand) graham crackers. We also stocked up on fruit and a jar of Jeni’s Salty Caramel Sauce. (I never said these were going to be healthy s’mores!).

Here are the combos we came up with! They were all delicious but I think our favorite was the one with strawberries & white chocolate (made with the Divine White Chocolate & Strawberries bar, pictured above).

It’s true, I’m obsessed with cacao nibs. I don’t know how it happened. The first time I tried them, I spit them out because they were so disgusting. I was expecting them to taste like chocolate, but they weren’t sweet at all, and the bitterness completely overpowered the chocolate flavor. Now, I love them so much I try to put them in all my foods. I even created a chocolate bark recipe that uses them for a little bit of crunch. Trader Joe’s cacao nibs are what got me hooked, so they will always have a special place in my heart (dramatic, I know).


Cinnamon Schoolbook Cookies

Our staff was raving about these cute, kid-friendly cookies for their perfect balance of sugar and spice. For 130 calories, you get 15 alphabet cookies that will only set you back 8g sugar. These are the perfect vegan dessert option, and they only cost $2.99 for a huge container.

Okay, so I’m definitely not in college anymore and I do not live in a dorm (thank god), but this Trader Joe’s cookbook was perfect for my less-than-stellar kitchen skills. It’s chock-full of super easy and straight-forward recipes using cult-favorite TJ’s products, and they don’t take a lifetime to make or break the bank either. I loved the tortilla soup recipe.
